After an eventful week, in which his car owner was involved in his second plane crash, and an eventful race, with hard crashes by Kurt Busch and Elliott Sadler, red flags, and rain delays, Greg Biffle pulled away from the field, and finished nearly 3.6 seconds ahead of Tony Stewart for the victory at Pocono Raceway. This was Biffle’s 15th win in the Cup series, but only his first victory since 2008.
The beginning of the race was delayed due to weather, and there was another rain delay with only 23 laps remaining in the race. A half-hour long red flag period occurred after a spectacular crash that involved Kurt Busch and Elliott Sadler. Jimmie Johnson took responsibility for causing the wreck. In an attempt to bump-draft Busch, he turned him into the wall.
"I came up to bump-draft him and push him along down the back straightaway," Johnson said. "So, we did make some contact. He was already wobbling, and I bumped him, and then it [Busch's No. 2 Dodge] was wobbling some more, then eventually it did a lazy turn to the right and into the wall.
After the Busch/Sadler crash, all of the lead-lap drivers, except Sam Hornish Jr. entered the pits. Hornish led for 11 laps under caution, and then was stopped with the red-flagged rain delay. On the restart at lap 180, Biffle took the lead and drove away from the field.
The entire Roush organization was happy about Biffle’s win. As he crossed the line, he said over the radio, “This one’s for Jack!” He was referring to car owner Jack Roush, who was recovering at the Mayo Clinic from injuries sustained in the crash of a small plane in which he was flying.
Roush called Biffle in Victory Lane, and Biffle reported that Roush said, “He had never met somebody that had the will to win like I do. I’m glad he thinks of me like that.”
Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick, and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five. The strong finish for Harvick allowed him to increase his points lead over Jeff Gordon to 189.
