Denny Hamlin Pulls Away at Pocono for 4th Win

Amid fireworks of all kinds at the end of the race, Denny Hamlin calmly crossed the finish line to win the Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 at Pocono. He has clearly shown dominance at Pocono, as it is his fourth win in nine starts there.

Although Hamlin had tried to conserve his car throughout the long race, that strategy was abandoned late in the race. After the 7th caution of the race, he restarted in 15th place on lap 172. Thirteen of those cars in front of him had stayed out during the caution, and Kyle Busch beat him off pit road. The stop on pit road proved to be a good call on Hamlin’s part. Two laps later, he was in eighth place, and after the restart on lap 179, he took over the lead.

Everything was going smoothly then, until on lap 199, Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano got together, going for the same piece of real estate. This turned Logano, and moved him back from a winning contender to a finishing spot in the teens. Following the race, Logano had to be restrained by pit crew members from his and Harvick’s team, as he confronted Harvick for spinning him.

The caution on lap 199 sent the race into “overtime”. Hamlin pulled away on the restart on lap 203. This was fortunate for him, as a spectacular crash involving Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, Greg Biffle, and others occurred on the final lap. The field was frozen, and Hamlin chalked up another win. Logano’s temper was not the only one on display, as Kasey Kahne blamed his teammate A.J. Allmendinger for the crash.

"I don't know what A.J. was doing there," Kahne said. "I don't ever really talk to him much, but you can bet I'll be talking to him this week."

Tony Stewart was also very unhappy with his colleagues, and suggested that he isn’t going to put up with any more foolishness. "I've seen some of the worst driving I've ever seen in my life in a professional series right here," he said. "So for anybody that's looking for drama for the next couple races, start looking because I can promise I'm going to start making the highlight reel the next couple weeks."

While all of the post-race drama was going on, Denny Hamlin celebrated the win with a long burnout, which resulted in him banging his car against the wall.

Kyle Busch finished a strong second at Pocono, after leading for 32 laps. This finish allowed him to creep up on Kevin Harvick’s points lead, which now stands at 19. The top five was rounded out by Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, and Jimmie Johnson.

Kurt Busch continued his recent run of good finishes by ending in 6th, followed by Jeff Burton, Juan Montoya, Clint Bowyer, and A.J. Allmendinger.
